TÜSKA Organized the World Patient Safety Day Symposium Themed “Safe Care is the Right Care”
The Türkiye Healthcare Quality and Accreditation Institute (TÜSKA), in collaboration with Ankara Bilkent City Hospital, organized the World Patient Safety Day Symposium under the theme “Safe Care is the Right Care,” bringing together different disciplines in the healthcare field.
The opening speeches were delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bayram Demir, President of TÜSKA; Specialist Dr. Ali Niyazi Kurtcebe, Ankara Provincial Health Director; and Prof. Dr. Levent Öztürk, Coordinator Chief Physician of Bilkent City Hospital.
In his address, TÜSKA President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bayram Demir emphasized that patient safety lies at the very core of healthcare services, stating:
“Safe care is not just a choice, it is the most fundamental responsibility of healthcare services. This responsibility must be realized through multidisciplinary collaboration, continuous education, and a strong culture of quality.” Demir underlined TÜSEB-TÜSKA’s pioneering role in this field, noting that they will continue to work with determination in developing and implementing patient safety standards.
Ankara Provincial Health Director Specialist Dr. Ali Niyazi Kurtcebe highlighted that safe care can only be achieved through teamwork, continuous training, and comprehensive management of quality processes. Prof. Dr. Levent Öztürk, Coordinator Chief Physician of Bilkent City Hospital, stressed that patient safety goes beyond preventing medical errors; it also encompasses a patient-centered approach, effective communication, and ethical responsibilities.
Multi-Dimensional Assessments in Three Sessions
The first session, chaired by Specialist Dr. Ali Niyazi Kurtcebe, featured valuable presentations. Prof. Dr. Özlem Moraloğlu Tekin, Chief Physician of Ankara Bilkent City Hospital Maternity Hospital, shared insights on “Medical Practice and Patient Safety.” Specialist Dr. Erman Eker, Head of the Department of Health Facilities Evaluation and Development at the Ministry of Health General Directorate of Public Hospitals, delivered a presentation titled “Patient Safety in Medical Practice in Türkiye,” providing key information to the participants.
The second session was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Keziban Avcı from TÜSKA. Specialist Dr. Filiz Denizli Ergen, Deputy Coordinator Chief Physician of Bilkent City Hospital, presented on “Institutional Leadership and Patient Safety,” followed by Prof. Dr. Umut Beylik from TÜSKA, who shared evaluations on “Accreditation and Patient Safety.”
The third session, chaired by Prof. Dr. Levent Öztürk, included perspectives from the nursing discipline. Prof. Dr. Ayfer Tezel, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing at Ankara University, presented on “The Role of Nurses in Patient Safety,” while Prof. Dr. Sultan Ayaz Alkaya, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing at Gazi University, discussed “The Nursing Discipline and Patient Safety.”
A Broader Perspective Beyond Medical Error
Hosting multi-dimensional discussions, the symposium once again revealed that patient safety is not only about preventing medical errors but also requires a holistic approach that incorporates leadership, teamwork, ethical responsibility, empathy, and effective communication
