TÜSKA Healthcare Accreditation Surveyors Have Participated in the “Enhance Medication Safety” Webinar Organized by the World Health Organization (WHO)

The second session of the World Patient Safety Day Goals Webinar Series, organized under the coordination of the World Health Organization (WHO), was held online on 5 March 2026. The session titled “Enhance Medication Safety” focused particularly on practices aimed at strengthening medication safety in newborn and pediatric care.

During the webinar, it was emphasized that medication use in pediatric patients differs significantly from that in adults, and therefore requires specialized approaches to ensure safety. Factors such as calculating medication doses according to a child’s weight and age, preparing medications in different formulations, and the active involvement of caregivers in medication administration processes were highlighted as elements that may increase the risk of medication errors.

The meeting also drew attention to the importance of implementing practices to enhance medication safety, such as the use of standardized dose calculation tools and double-checking high-risk medications by healthcare providers.

In the panel session held with the participation of international experts, several topics were discussed, including the role of clinical pharmacists in strengthening pediatric medication safety, dose calculation methods, the dose banding approach, and strategies to reduce medication waste. Experts emphasized that strong collaboration among healthcare professionals is essential to ensure safe medication use, particularly for pediatric patients.

Healthcare Accreditation Surveyors from the Türkiye Institute for Healthcare Quality and Accreditation (TÜSKA) also participated in the webinar and followed the latest international approaches to medication safety alongside global experts. TÜSKA continues to closely monitor national and international developments aimed at improving quality and patient safety in healthcare and to contribute to knowledge sharing in this field.
